MIDHURST – In recognition of the County’s long-standing record of environmental stewardship and the important role that forests play in our region and across the world, the County of Simcoe joins communities across the globe in celebrating March 21 as the International Day of Forests.
“2022 is an important year for the Simcoe County Forest as we celebrate our 100th Anniversary,” said Warden George Cornell. “Originally established in 1922 to rehabilitate 'wastelands', these forests provide a multitude of environmental, social, and economic benefits to the County including recreation and the provision of clean water and natural habitats. Today and every day we encourage residents and visitors to join us in appreciating our more than 150 properties, and to share your experiences as we celebrate 100 years of the Simcoe County Forest.”
Spanning more than 33,000 acres, the Simcoe County Forest is the largest and one of the most productive municipal forests in Ontario. In September 2021, the County of Simcoe received national honours by being recognized as the Forest Capital of Canada for 2022 by the Canadian Institute of Forestry (CIF), which acknowledges leadership in forestry and environmental stewardship.
Celebrating our Roots
In recognition of the 100th anniversary, the County has launched “Celebrating our Roots: 100 years of the Simcoe County Forest. Throughout 2022, interested parties are encouraged to visit findyourforest.simcoe.ca to learn more about our vast history and all the forest has to offer. In addition, to coincide with the International Day of Trees, today we are launching a short film detailing the history behind these incredible lands. This video can be viewed on YouTube.
