Eastview Theatre Production:

Over eighty students in the Theatre Production program work with dance, drama, and music teachers and a team of specialists in the many areas of producing a musical. Students learn performance and backstage roles such as props, lighting, sound, costumes, publicity, and set design. Instrumental music students perform the live show accompaniment in the rock combo pit band.

The performers share principal roles by having one or two shows in the “spotlight” and the rest of the performances as part of the cast. They spend 75 minutes per day in class - acting, singing, dancing, and learning technical skills - and then stay after school to rehearse five hours a week with additional time closer to the show.

History of the Show:

Fame - The Musical is a stage musical based on the hit 1980 film starring Irene Cara and directed by Alan Parker. The film achieved cult status in the 1980’s and featured the famous title song by Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford that won a 1980 Academy Award for Best Original Song and reached Number 4 on the US Billboard 100. David de Silva, one of the original producers of the film, developed the musical that debuted in 1988. Although there are similarities, the musical has a different script, book, and score than the original film and television versions. Fame – The Musical features the title song and many more upbeat numbers created specifically for the show.

Brief Synopsis:

Fame - The Musical follows a group of students through their four years at the High School of Performing Arts (P.A.) in New York City. At school students strive to excel in dance, drama, and music as they perform everything from ballet to hip- hop and classical music to rap. The audience sees the students experience success and failure as they deal with issues that still challenge today’s young people.
