The players in the band – one of the ultimate cover bands – are nibbling at the bit to get back to Barrie, specifically, Mavricks Music Hall this Friday, and re-create decades past in pop music.
The band called Dwayne Gretzky, and spokesperson Tyler Kyte, laments the late start to summer, and tells Barrie Today he and the band want to encourage customers to shed their winter clothes and cut loose.
“Everybody loves a good ice storm in March (or April), am I right?” says a tongue-in-cheek Kyte. “This winter was a bit of a drag. But it feels like we skipped spring and went right into full-on summer.
That said, “Itʼs an exciting time of year: patios and short sleeves… sun… beer. It’s a great time to bring Dwayne Gretzky up to Mavricks for a 90s show,” full of familiar tunes by familiar bands.
Taste in music is all in the ear of the beholder, much like physical beauty belongs to the eyes. Kyte knows it’s unfair to single out any one era of pop music as being “better” than another. But he admits there are musical differences in different decades.
“Growing up listening to our parents’ record collections, I think weʼve always enjoyed playing music from the 70s and 80s. But playing songs from the 90s has a different feeling. These are the records we owned growing up. Each of the band members has a different experience with the 90s, and when we put it all together … it’s a big, dance-y, sweaty, shiny Dwayne.”
The band has a few more gigs to play here in
“Itʼs fun to play south of the border,” he says, “in new cities to new audiences. Most of our tunes go over really well down there.”
But it’s twice as much fun to get back up here, to
“We played Mavricks once last year. It was a blast. We couldnʼt believe the turnout! Canʼt wait to do it again!”
