Many Georgian College students displaced by last week's fire on the 8th floor of the Barrie residence are staying at a local hotel.

A total of 64 students were forced out of their 8th floor rooms but the college had been able to relocate some students within the building.

"Currently 62 students are at the hotel with three of those students moving back into the residence today," said Mark Hall, Senior Communications Specialist for Georgian College.

Hall says some students chose to make personal arrangements, however most were staying at the hotel.

Campus Living Centres, which operates the residence, is paying the cost of the temporary relocation.

Barrie Fire and Emergency Services were called to the high-rise at 101 Georgian Drive last Thursday morning after fire broke out in an 8th floor unit.

Barrie Fire media officer Samantha Hoffman says the blaze was caused by heat from a laptop charger that was left plugged near bedding.

Frightened students scrambled to escape as black smoke filled the upper hallways.

Deputy Fire Chief Cory Mainprize told BarrieToday.com at the fire scene that the unit where flames broke out was "destroyed."

Hoffman says students were escorted up to their rooms to retrieve necessities.

The college says residents of all other floors are back in their rooms.

A damage estimate for the fire has not yet been determined.

There is no word on when the 8th floor will be re-opened for students.
