Georgian College student entrepreneurs are sharpening the pitches they will soon be making to judges in the annual Georgian Den competition at the Barrie Campus. The stakes are high, with $5,000 in cash prizes at stake.
Approximately 30 student teams from the Hospitality and Business programs are participating. The event takes place Monday, Apr. 10 from 2 to 7 p.m.
Over the current semester, students have developed ideas for new businesses and then created comprehensive business plans. Each group hopes to have what it takes to win the premier spot in the Den.
Students first compete in an elimination round in which they showcase their business concepts and pitch their idea to our preliminary judges, made up of faculty, alumni and industry professionals. The six top-scoring groups will earn a spot in the final round of the Georgian Den, where teams will compete for one of the four cash earning positions.
In support of our future industry leaders, local industry professionals including Kent Smith, owner/operator of Michael & Marion’s restaurant in Barrie; Scott Kennedy from the IoT (Internet of Things) division of Rogers; and Michael Lalonde, co-owner of Innovative Automation, volunteer their expertise as the “Bears” on the Den judging panel.
The elimination trade show to determine finalists runs in the Holland Lounge in Georgian’s Automotive Building from 2 to 5 p.m. The final round and award ceremony will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Rowntree Theatre. Visitors are welcome to drop by.
