The Georgian Grizzlies men’s rugby team had their eyes on first place in a battle between two undefeated teams on Thursday night when they hosted the Sheridan Bruins under the lights of J.C. Massie Field in Barrie.

Entering the game, both the Grizzlies and Bruins had matching 3-0 records and sat tied on top of the OCAA west division standings.

The Grizzlies had a great start scoring 33 unanswered points and led 33-5 after the first half.

The game tightened up in the second half, but Georgian were able to pull away with a 50-17 victory.

Liam Wilson (Orillia) had a terrific game scoring a team-high three tries while teammate Ryan Connolly (Barrie) connected on five converts through the wind for a 10 point effort.

Connolly currently leads the entire OCAA in scoring with 67 points through four games.

Georgian’s other tries were scored by Tennyson Brown (Alliston), Brandon Innis (Toronto), Donovan Jacko (Brampton), Brodie Ranger (Elliot Lake) and Mark Rodman (Minesing).

Georgian has now won four straight games to open the regular season and have outscored their opponents 262-42 so far this year. 

The Grizzlies and Bruins will face each other one more time in the regular season on Oct. 20 in the annual Battle of the Bears rivalry game which will take place at Sheridan.

Georgian will be back in action when they play their final regular season home game on Sunday, Oct. 14 when they host the Conestoga Condors at 1 p.m. at J.C. Massie Field. Tickets for the game will be available at the doors for $5.
