The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted their annual Georgian Fall Classic tournament on Friday and Saturday at the Georgian Athletic Centre in Barrie.
It was a strong showing for the men’s team as they finished the tournament as the only undefeated team in the games played.
Georgian opened the tournament against the Sault Cougars on Friday night.
The Grizzlies were impressive winning the game 94-57 over the Cougars thanks to big efforts from Daniel Martyn (Barrie) who scored a team-high 18 points and Tyler Vanessen (Whitby) who had a 16 point effort.
Georgian carried that momentum into Saturday pulling out a tight 89-85 win over a strong Niagara Knights team.
Anthony Meggo (Whitby) had a huge game scoring a game-high 31 points while Tyler Vanessen scored 23 points in the win.
On the women’s side, the Grizzlies came out on the short side of two tight match-ups.
In their first game, after being tied at 40, the Grizzlies let one slip away as the Cougars pulled away late in a 50-43 win. Kayla Denes (Barrie) had a team-high 12 points while teammates Kelsey Dunkeld (Barrie) and Cassidy Warren Timpano (Barrie) each had nine point efforts.
On Saturday, the Grizzlies made a valiant effort to comeback but came up short in a 41-36 loss to the Niagara Knights.
Cassidy Warren-Timpano led the team with a 14 point effort while Kayla Denes had 12 points in the first half for the Grizzlies.
Georgian will now prepare for their OCAA regular season which gets underway this coming Friday, Oct. 19 when the Grizzlies travel to take on the Seneca Sting.
The Grizzlies men’s and women’s teams will play their 2018-19 home openers on Wednesday, Oct. 24 when they host the Durham Lords. The double-header starts with the women’s game at 6 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m.
The first 500 people in attendance will receive a free “GC State” wristband with tickets available at the door for $5.
