After several months of waiting, the bridge over Highway 400 connecting Harvie Road and Big Bay Point Road in Barrie opened to vehicle traffic and pedestrians on Thursday night.
The $76-million project has been designed and constructed over the last four years to reduce traffic congestion in Barrie's south end around the Mapleview Drive and Essa Road on- and off-ramps to Highway 400, giving drivers another option to avoid those often clogged-up areas.
The new bridge has five lanes for vehicle traffic, two separate lanes for bicycles and two sidewalks for pedestrians.
The span also has clearance for the future widening of Highway 400.
