Here's what Barrie has planned for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The City of Barrie will recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30 with opportunities for community members to gather, learn and reflect.

Events are being offered in a collaborative effort between the Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin Primary Care Team of the Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle (BANAC), the Barrie Native Friendship Centre (BNFC), the City of Barrie and the Barrie Public Library.

Sacred Fire and Sunrise Ceremony:
Spirit Catcher (25 Simcoe St.) on Sept. 30, sunrise to sunset (6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.)

  • The Sacred Fire and Sunrise Ceremony hosted by the Barrie Native Friendship Centre will honour all who have been impacted by residential schools. All are welcome to reflect, offer a prayer, share stories, learn and heal together as a community.
  •      6:30 a.m. Sunrise Ceremony by BNFC
  •      9 a.m. Tipi Raising Ceremony by BNFC
  •      1-4 p.m. Mamaway’s Mobile Clinic will be onsite
  •      3-6 p.m. Read and learn together with The Orange Shirt Story Walk by the Barrie Public Library, located adjacent to the Spirit Catcher sculpture. Prepare for the walk by customizing your own button to wear and an orange flag to fly high.
  •      6-6:40 p.m. Show your support and walk with the Indigenous community to participate in the Every Child Matters Walk of commemoration hosted by Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin Primary Care Team of the Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle (BANAC). The route will loop from the Spirit Catcher sculpture to Centennial Beach.
  •      Information booths, sacred fire and guest speakers will be onsite all day

Truth and Reconciliation Vigil:
Monday, Sept. 30, 6 to 7 p.m. | Barrie South Simcoe Métis Council, 64 Cedar Pointe Dr. Unit 1401 &1402 | All ages

  • Wear an orange shirt to raise awareness about the history and legacy of the residential school system. Candles will be provided as we take a moment to reflect. Family-friendly, with food and activities for children.
