Two residents will be recognized by city council Monday night - one for life-saving actions in a fire and the other for a long-time commitment to keeping Barrie beautiful.

Kaitlyn Soules,12, will be honoured for her actions that saved the lives of her family members during a house fire.

The girl alerted her dad and brothers after smelling smoke and hearing the fire alarm at their Highview Road home June 14.

Her dad Dennis Soules  had previously been hailed a hero for saving the lives of several small children at the White Towers Hotel fire in 2012.

The other Barrie resident who will be recognized at council is longtime volunteer Richard Strikwerda.

For years, Strikwerda has taken up the task of cleaning up city green spaces that have been littered with trash and junk.

Stikwerda has even mowed the grass and planted flower beds in some areas.

The big items of city business on council's agenda include its next move regarding a year-round public market at the Transit Terminal on Maple Avenue.

The plan includes renovating the transit building and constructing a separate building for the Barrie Farmers' Market.

Council could confirm plans to hire a consultant team for about $100,000 for the project.

A report back to council would be due before summer recess.

Councillors will also look at moving the annual Celebrate Barrie Festival to Labour Day weekend this summer and call it Illuminate Barrie.

Festivities to honour Canada's 150th Birthday would include two days of fireworks and many other cultural, artistic and family events.
