Midland goes 'traditional' route by lighting whole tree at event

Midland mayor takes jab at Orillia's now infamous Christmas tree, which found its way into Jimmy Fallon's monologue on The Tonight Show

Midland's Christmas tree is officially lit.

Dozens of local residents came out to Neezhoday Park early Friday evening to enjoy the Christmas kickoff festivities that even included a visit from Santa Claus.

Mayor Bill Gordon offered thanks to the hard work of Downtown Midland BIA and the town's operations team to help the downtown look "amazing."

And unlike its Orillia counterpart, Gordon joked that Midland "decided to go the traditional way and light the whole tree rather just the trunk.

"That’s a little dig at my buddy Don, Mayor McIssac of Orillia."

The Orillia tree even caught the eye of Jimmy Fallon, who poked fun at the tree lighting during The Tonight Show last week.

On Tuesday, Tiny Township holds its annual tree-lighting celebration from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Perkinsfield Park.
