Visitors to Barrie’s Sunnidale Park now have a new place upon which to rest and reflect following the installation of a bench, the commemoration of which took place at the Barrie Garden Club’s (BGC) 150th anniversary on Sunday, June 23.

“This bench is located in a tranquil area in Sunnidale Park, offering our community a peaceful place where they can enjoy the quiet beauty of the park,” said co-president Joan Nieman-Agapas, who manages the BGC with Kimberly Sturge.

“The bench honours members of the Barrie Garden Club, past, present and future and its location is appropriate given the garden club’s strong association with the park.”

Initially established as the Barrie Horticultural Society in 1874, the BGC is one of the oldest continuing clubs in the city, and is the oldest gardening club in District 16 of the Ontario Horticultural Association, of which it is a member.

Its relationship to Sunnidale Park goes back to 1974 when members created the park’s arboretum, now operated by the City of Barrie.

More than 150 people attended the anniversary celebration, which included a tour of the arboretum, as well as guest speakers, presentations, vendors and the commemorative bench dedication.

For more information about the BGC or to join the club, see www.barriegardenclub.ca.

Membership includes expert speakers, flower shows, a photography contest, and the opportunity to volunteer at BGC activities, including a community garden at Shear Park, the Pioneer Garden at Fort Willow, the Barrie Library Rooftop Garden, and more.
