Hundreds of residents were forced from their homes Sunday night when fire broke out at a Barrie highrise.
Barrie Firefighters were called to a blaze in the building located at 90 Edgehill Drive around 7:15 p.m.
Flames erupted in a 9th floor unit forcing the evacuation of the 14-storey building.
"No one was home at the time so our investigator is going in to investigate," said Barrie Fire Information Officer Samantha Hoffmann.
"It does appear to be contained to one unit at this point."
Barrie Police and County of Simcoe Paramedics were also on scene but no one was injured.
Barrie Firefighters knocked down the blaze and were venting the smoke.
Two cats, a pet rabbit and a turtle were rescued.
Firefighter Rob Smith administered oxygen to one cat that was suffering from the effects of smoke.
"I don't believe that the damage is that high to call int he fire marshal," Hoffmann said.
The Fire Marshal investigates if the losses are half a million dollars.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Ironically, Barrie Fire Prevention officers are in the midst of trying to inspect all highrises in the city.
All tenants were allowed back into their homes around 10 p.m. except for the unit that burned.
