Metrolinx is set to begin overnight construction work later this month at Aurora GO, as work continues on all-day two-way GO.

Etobicoke-based Metrolinx contractor Grascan Construction Ltd. will be working overnight within the rail corridor starting March 24. Work will include the decommissioning of old infrastructure and installation of new signalling systems such as bungalows, signal towers and radio towers.

This work is being done to allow for the future installation of a second track at Aurora GO station, and will take place south of Industrial Parkway North and north of Berczy Street.

This work will occur overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Monday, March 24, to Friday, May 2.

"The work will be continuous during this period and will be conducted overnight as the activities require equipment to be placed on the track and can only be done safely while there is no planned train service," according to a notice from Metrolinx.

Crews are set to be using various trucks, excavators, skid steers, loaders, backhoes and track-specific tools, with local residents set to “experience normal noise associated with construction activities," which is not expected to reach significant levels, according to Metrolinx.

Sound- and air-monitoring technology will be used to make sure noise levels do not exceed the 65-decibel limit, in compliance with Metrolinx’s construction noise criteria for residential work, the transit provider added. Vibration monitors will also be used as needed. Contractors will also strive to point lights away from homes.

The work is not expected to impact GO service at Aurora or along the Barrie Line.

Questions or concerns about the work can be sent to YorkRegion@metrolinx.ca.
