Peel St. fire causes 'minor damage,' sends one person to hospital

'(It) appears something may have been knocked over and a small fire started on the floor,' says fire chief, adding person was taken to hospital as a precaution

A morning fire at a building in the city’s north end is still being investigated with four fire trucks on scene.

Barrie fire crews got a call at approximately 9:45 a.m., Friday, for a reported structure fire at 156 Peel St., near Grove Street East.

Barrie Fire Chief Cory Mainprize told BarrieToday the fire in the multi-unit residential building was contained to the second floor and one person was transported to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH).

“It was more of a precautionary measure and the individual is OK, maybe more upset than anything,” Mainprize said.

“There will be minor damage and some people will probably be able to return to their unit tonight, but we are conducting the investigation and also making sure people do have a place to go should they not be able to return," the chief added.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but Mainprize said it “appears something may have been knocked over and a small fire started on the floor.”

“Our investigators will look at this as it is not significant enough to have the OFM (Office of the Fire Marshal) attend,” said Mainprize.
