Polar Plunge raises more than $16K for Special Olympians (13 photos)

About 70 jumpers took the plunge to raise funds and awareness

About 70 jumpers braved the icy waters of Kempenfelt Bay on Saturday to raise money for a worthy cause.

Saturday marked the fourth annual Polar Plunge, presented by the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run. The plunge raises funds for Special Olympics Ontario.

Last year, the plunge raised more than $15,000 for the cause. This year, Barrie police Chief Kimberley Greenwood said they hoped to exceed that number, which she announced at the end of the plunge came to more than $16,000.

“We have done really well this year,” said Greenwood. “It is a fundraising event, but it’s also about raising awareness about our Special Olympians.”

Two local Special Olympians took the plunge on Saturday alongside representatives from local businesses, some young Barrie Colts, Barrie police, Barrie Fire and Simcoe County paramedics.

“I look forward to this every year!” said Greenwood.
