NEWS RELEASE
ORILLIA NATURALISTS' CLUB
*************************
The Carden Field Naturalists will host the joint meeting of the Huronia Naturalists' Club on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Carden Recreation Centre on Lake Dalrymple.

This event is a unique opportunity for nature enthusiasts across the region to come together and learn from leading experts in the field of wildlife conservation.

Our featured speaker for the evening will be Helmi Ness, a biologist with Wildlife Preservation Canada, who has been actively involved in the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike surveys on the Carden Alvar. Ness will provide an insightful presentation covering the history and current status of this critical work.

Wildlife Preservation Canada, a national organization dedicated to saving endangered species, has been at the forefront of efforts to preserve the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike, one of Canada’s most endangered bird species. The Carden Alvar, a globally significant natural area, is one of the last strongholds for this species. Ness's work involves monitoring and protecting these remarkable birds, whose populations have been in sharp decline due to habitat loss and other factors.

In addition to the presentation, a portion of the meeting will be dedicated to reports from the regional naturalists’ clubs, including Carden, Orillia, Midland Penetang, and Barrie. This segment will provide an update on each club's activities, conservation efforts, and upcoming events. It’s a great opportunity to hear about the exciting work being done by fellow naturalists and to foster collaboration across the region.

This meeting will be an excellent opportunity for members and guests to gain a deeper understanding of the conservation efforts taking place right in our backyard. Don’t miss this chance to connect with fellow naturalists and learn more about the vital work being done to protect our local wildlife.

All are welcome to attend.

About Wildlife Preservation Canada
Wildlife Preservation Canada is a national charity that provides hands-on care to save endangered species facing imminent extinction in Canada. Their efforts focus on species that require direct intervention to ensure their survival, such as the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike. By working closely with local partners, Wildlife Preservation Canada plays a crucial role in conserving Canada’s natural heritage.

About the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike
The Eastern Loggerhead Shrike is a small, predatory songbird known for its distinctive hunting behaviour and striking appearance. Once widespread across eastern North America, the species has suffered severe population declines and is now critically endangered. The Carden Alvar remains one of the few places where these birds can still be found, making conservation efforts in this region particularly important.

We look forward to seeing you at this important event!
