Rama Central Public School is celebrating receiving two national awards at a special assembly on January 14.

In June 2015, Rama Central received the Jack Layton Award for Youth Action in Sustainability for the school’s food drive for orphaned wildlife.

It was selected as one of eight projects from across Canada.

Recently, the school also learned that they won second prize in the Learning for a Sustainable Future (LSF) Our Canada Project, receiving $2,000 for further projects.

The Our Canada Project is a project of Learning for a Sustainable Future (LSF) and is supported by the RBC Foundation, established to recognize the creativity and innovation of Canadian youth in modeling responsible citizenship.

These two awards recognize the work of Rama Central Grade 4 and 5 students who organized three wildlife food drives to encourage students and staff to collect acorns, pine cones, maple keys and windfall apples for orphaned wildlife.

The school has consulted with local wildlife centres and will use the $2,000 grant to have students build wooden sleeping boxes for bats, birds, squirrels and opossums who are being rehabilitated.

The school assembly starts at 9:30 a.m. to celebrate the Jack Layton Award and receive the award and $2,000 cheque from LSF and RBC. Rama Central PS is located at 7269 County Road 169 in Washago.
