Reach, throw, row, go!

Georgian College students get icy rescue lessons

A group of Georgian College Pre-service Firefighter Education and Training program students took an icy plunge in Kempenfelt Bay Friday as part of the practical portion of ice water rescue training.

Using the bright yellow fortuna, students practiced 'reach, throw, row, go' techniques under the watchful eye of instructor and Barrie Firefighter Rob Reedman who stood on shore.

Reedman's role in the scenario was incident safety officer.

Three other instructors wearing white helmets were out on the ice which Reedman says is melting fast.

During the first day of training Thursday there was ice just off the Tiffin Boat Launch but by Friday, students had to move the exercise further out because the ice close to shore was gone.
