On Aug. 17, the Barrie Public Library will be proudly hosting the 20th anniversary of the Barrie Dragon Boat Festival presented by Tim Hortons at Heritage Park.
This milestone event celebrates two decades of community spirit, competitive paddling and raising funds for local charities. It also marks the largest turnout since 2019 with 36 teams ready to make waves on Kempenfelt Bay.
“This will be a really special year as we welcome a large number of teams and paddlers, including many returning participants who have been with us from the start,” said Chris Vanderkruys, director of business and development at Barrie Public Library. “The Barrie Dragon Boat Festival has become a cherished tradition using our city’s beautiful waterfront, uniting our community, and supporting local charities, including the library’s ongoing Future Branches campaign.”
Since its inception, the Barrie Dragon Boat Festival has raised over $2 million for local charities, enabling significant community projects such as the Painswick branch of the library.
As the festival’s presenting sponsor, Tim Hortons reaffirms its commitment to community impact.
“We are excited to continue working alongside the Barrie Public Library to help make a difference in our community,” adds Johnny Mizzoni, Tim Hortons restaurant owner. “It’s incredible to see the funds that are raised get reinvested in our community through the many charities who benefit. This is why we are proud partners of the Barrie Dragon Boat Festival.”
The event will also include a Tim Hortons Family Zone, with free family-friendly activities provided by the library, and Tim Hortons coffee available by donation.
The Barrie Public Library extends its gratitude to sponsors, participants, volunteers, and community partners whose dedication ensures the success of this annual event. Join us at Barrie’s waterfront starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday to celebrate this milestone anniversary, enjoy the thrilling races, and support the growth of our community.
