Students, start your robots!

First annual VEX Robot Challenge held at Barrie high school
St. Joseph's Catholic High School was abuzz with machines as students took part in the first annual VEX Robot Challenge.

Twelve teams from all 9 Catholic secondary schools in the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board competed Tuesday in the event with robots they designed and built.

The contest featured individual skills, team challenges and the winners received trophies.

The competition builds throughout the day to the ultimate challenge where alliance teams are pitted against each other.

"It's all about collaboration and sportsmanship because these teams have to work together to get to the championship and win the championship," said Perry Cavarzan, Secondary Curriculum Consultant

The robot challenge was held in a classroom this year with 45 students participating.

"We're starting small and definitely hoping to build it in coming years," said Cavarzan.

It is estimated that more than 10,000 teams from 32 countries around the world will play in over 750 VEX Robot tournaments this year.
