Barrie Police issued 30 tickets on day two of Project Safe Start and all were for speeding infractions.

Just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, Const. Sarah Bamford says one car was clocked doing 82 km/h in a 40 km/h zone.

"That person was a teacher running late for school," said Bamford. "It's a $634 dollar fine and four points."

Barrie Police launched Project Safe Start this week.

It's a road safety initiative in 23 school zones throughout the city to educate and bring awareness to motorists and pedestrians travelling through school zones and along bus routes.

On day one police issued 50 tickets for various infractions including speeding, careless driving and one arrest for a drug-impaired driver.

The highest speed recorded on the first day of school was 70 km/hr in a 40 km/hr school zone.

That driver faces a $450 fine and the loss of 4 points.

"Overall it's rather disappointing with people knowing it's back to school that we're still having to hand out tickets," said Bamford. "We can't stress enough, kids are excited and not paying attention. That's why it's so important to follow the posted limit in these school zones."
