SOUTHERN GEORGIAN BAY – Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have been kept busy since the beginning of the March break safety campaign.

Officers have been paying particular attention on Distracted driving which is one of the “Big 4” causal factors of motor vehicle collisions and injuries sustained from collisions.

The “big 4” driving behaviours include Speeding, Distracted Driving, Non seatbelt compliance and Impaired Driving.

During the first four days of this safety campaign, officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP detachment have laid the following charges:

Speeding – 60

Distracted Driving – 2

Seatbelt charges – 4

Other Highway Traffic Act – 10

Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act – 6

Other Moving violations – 13

Staff Sergeant Mike Burton made the following comments:

“There has been an increased focus on distracted driving enforcement this past week with few violations observed in our detachment area.”

“Unfortunately, there are still those on our roadways who continue to be a danger to themselves and others due to their use of handheld communication or entertainment devices, as well as other activities that distract drivers from the task of operating a motor vehicle.”

Officers will be continuing their dedicated support to this campaign until March 21, 2016.

The OPP would like to thank the public for reporting any driving behaviours that put other motorists and their families at risk on our roadways.
