Stretch your legs and get ready to walk a mile in high heels, fellas.
The 14th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraising event struts into Heritage Park in downtown Barrie on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes asks men, women and children to literally walk one mile in women's shoes.
"You can't really understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes," organizers say on their website promoting the upcoming event.
"We do this to understand the experience of women and encourage the community to talk about this difficult topic — abuse,” they add.
The event benefits local women and children affected by intimate partner violence and is supported by the Women and Children’s Shelter of Barrie.
Their agency has provided a safe and secure refuge for abused women and their children in Simcoe County since 1981.
“By focusing on the positive aspect of a community coming together around this topic, the walk strives to empower individuals to take a stand against gendered violence,” organizers say.
A large portion of the agency’s funding comes from the community.
Their goal is to raise $70,000 with the event. At the time of publication, their website shows $42,000 of that amount has been raised to date.
