Baycats drop Canada Day decision on the road

LONDON – London moved two games back of Welland at the top of the IBL standings following Monday’s 8-3 win over Barrie at Labatt Park.

Kaiden Cardoso singled, doubled and drove in three for the Majors (13-6). Gibson Krzeminski had a pair of RBI, Andrew Lawrence went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, Starling Joseph and Eduardo De Oleo each had two hits, and Byron Reichstein added an RBI.

Travis Keys (4-1) went six innings in the win, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.

Nolan Machibroda singled twice and drove in a pair for Barrie (11-7). Canice Ejoh and Noel McGarry-Doyle had two hits apiece atop the lineup.

Carlos Sano (0-3) was lifted after giving up seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Sucre shuts down Royals

GUELPH – Brantford righty Jeremias Sucre tossed seven shutout innings, and the Red Sox offence came alive late in a 3-1 win in Guelph on Canada Day. 

Sucre (4-1) scattered six hits, walked one and fanned four. 

At the plate, Brantford’s Jeremie Veilleux and Vaibhav Desai each drove in a run in the sixth inning to open the scoring. 

Ethan Paulos scored in the seventh to add insurance for the Red Sox (8-12). Paulos and Kieran Bowles each had two hits. 

J.D. Williams went 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a stolen base for the Royals (10-7). Conner Morro singled and doubled.

Kyle Thomas (1-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits over two innings. He walked one and struck out one.

Jacob Kush started and went five scoreless innings, giving up two hits and walking two while racking up seven strikeouts. 

Barnstormers score late to beat Leafs

CHATHAM – Spencer Morin’s RBI single with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 7-7 tie and sent the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers to a 9-7 home win over Toronto on Monday evening. 

Mitsuki Fukuda was the offensive star for Chatham-Kent (8-13). He went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI. Seth Strong drove in two, Daniel Battel singled twice and scored twice, and Spencer Marcus had two hits, three runs and an RBI. 

Noah Richardson (3-0) allowed an unearned run in relief to pick up the win. He walked three and struck out one. Brock Whitson struck out two in two scoreless innings to earn his first save. 

Chatham-Kent starter Aden Ryan was touched for four runs (three earned) on 10 hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out two. 

Johnathan Solazzo hit a pair of solo home runs for the Leafs (7-15). Charlie Towers went 3-for-4 with three RBI, Joe Vinicio drove in a run, Connor Lewis had three hits, Ryan Dos Santos singled twice and scored four times, and Jesse Hodges went 2-for-4. 

Marek Deska (0-1) took the loss, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits in an inning. Toronto starter Angel Castro lasted six innings and gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with two walks and nine punchouts.

Cardinals end Jackfish’s streak

WELLAND – The streak is over. 

After 12 straight wins, Welland is back in the losing column after a 4-3 defeat to Hamilton on Canada Day. 

Luis Bernardo, Cole Iantomasi and Connor Hicks each drove in a run and scored for Hamilton (10-9).

Zach Cameron (1-0) picked up the win in 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out two. Mizuki Akatsuka started and went seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts. 

Welland starter Ben Abram (5-1) went the distance in a hard-luck loss. Abram struck out 10 while giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits with a walk. 

Steven Moretto and Robert Mullen each had an RBI for Welland (15-4), which also lost at home for the first time this season. Jake Sanford went 3-for-4 with two runs.
