The Georgian Grizzlies men’s rugby team played their first home game in nearly two years on Sunday when they hosted the St. Lawrence Surge at J.C. Massie Field in Barrie.

It was a battle between two evenly matched teams who played hard physically to try and gain an advantage.

After the Surge held a 12-7 lead at halftime, it was the Grizzlies who battled back scoring the lone try of the second half.

Both teams threatened to score late, but the defence of each team held up and the game ended in a 12-12 tie.

Georgian had tries from Rylan Moulton (Barrie) and Daniel Martyn (Barrie) while Benjamin Robinson (Frankford) had a convert to round out the Grizzlies scoring.

The Grizzlies now hold a 1-0-1 record on the season and they currently sit in first place in the OCAA men’s rugby standings.

The draw keeps the Grizzlies undefeated all-time in the regular season on J.C. Massie Field where they now have an all-time record of 12-0-1 since 2016.

The Grizzlies will be back in action next Saturday, Oct. 9 when they travel to take on the Humber Hawks (1-0). The Hawks defeated the Sheridan Bruins in their only game 36-6 on Oct. 2.

Georgian will host their next home game on Saturday, Oct. 23 when the Durham Lords at J.C. Massie Field.
