Update (11:07 a.m.): The Barrie Colts confirmed they have acquired Dalyn Wakely from North Bay in exchange for winger Shamar Moses, as well as a fourth-round pick (Ottawa) in 2025 and a fifth-round pick (Niagara) in 2027.

“Dalyn is someone we have admired for multiple seasons being on the opposite side," Marty Williamson, Barrie's head coach and general manager, said on the team's website. "We have seen him a lot throughout our match-ups against North Bay and he has worked his way into being one of the most complete players in our league.

"Adding someone with such a high skill set and character to our group will be a big piece in building towards our goals," the GM added. "Having him on our side is something we’re really looking forward to and our fans should be excited about.”

Williamson said the move will improve the Colts' roster this season.

"It’s always tough giving up one of your younger players in Shamar, but we feel this deal will help our group’s goals for this season," he said.

The team says Wakely is expected to arrive in Barrie this afternoon and has chosen to wear No. 81.

ORIGINAL STORY

BayToday, a sister site to BarrieToday, has learned that the Ontario Hockey League's North Bay Battalion are moving overage forward Dalyn Wakely to Barrie for the Colts' 2023 first-round pick Shamar Moses and multiple picks.

Wakely was drafted in the sixth round (192nd overall) by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. The Port Hope, Ont., product centred arguably the best line in Canadian Hockey League playing alongside Owen Van Steensel and Anthony Romani in 2023-24.

In 66 games played last year, he registered 39 goals and 104 points in what was a breakout season for him on the ice and the scoresheet. In 199 career OHL games, he has 89 goals and 98 assists for 187 points.

The power forward has been well respected in the North Bay community as he created the program Wake's Sake, which raised money for North Bay's Gathering Place soup kitchen. He won the CHL humanitarian of the year award for his charitable efforts in 2023.

The Troops chose Wakely from the Quinte Red Devils minor midgets in the second round (30th overall) of the OHL Priority Selection in April 2020.

This summer, Wakely spent a short time at Battalion training camp before he headed west for the Oilers' main camp, where it was expected by many he would play professionally in the Oilers system.

However, the 20-year-old was sent down to North Bay from the Oilers' camp after getting into one pre-season contest.

With the Battalion committing to Andrew LeBlanc, Jacob LeBlanc and new captain Owen Van Steensel as overagers this off-season, the Battalion hockey operations, led by Adam Dennis and general manager Johnny Winstanley, had to make a move.

In Moses, the Battalion acquire the Barrie Colts' first-round selection (19th overall) from the 2023 OHL Priority Selection.

The right-hand shot forward from Scarborough had five goals and 20 assists for 25 points in 66 games last year in his rookie OHL season.

This year, Moses has been held pointless in five games with the Colts.
