Organizers say inaugural Barrie cricket league off to smashing start

Super League Barrie season began Aug. 31 and runs until Sept. 15, with games played at Cheltenham Park

The Barrie Arts and Sports Academy is excited to announce the ongoing success of the inaugural Super League Barrie, a cricket league bringing together the local community in a celebration of sport, teamwork, and cultural diversity.

The league began on Aug. 31 and runs until Sept. 15, 2024, at Cheltenham Park in Barrie.

The Super League Barrie features eight dynamic teams, representing the vibrant and diverse cricket community in Barrie and the surrounding areas.

With 31 matches scheduled over three weekends, cricket enthusiasts and newcomers alike are experiencing high-quality matches that showcase local talent and passion for the sport.

Each day of the weekend, six matches take place, providing a thrilling display of cricketing skills and community spirit.

Participating teams:

  • Kings XI Barrie
  • Barrie Strikers
  • Barrie Newcomers
  • Royal Lions
  • Barrie Warriors
  • Royal Challengers Barrie
  • Barrie Tigers
  • Bayfield Warriors

The first weekend of the league, held on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, saw 12 matches played, with over 2,400 runs scored and more than 150 sixes hit, making it an exhilarating start. Barrie Warriors are currently on top of the points table after every team played three matches last weekend. The next matches are scheduled for Sept. 7 and Sept. 8, weather dependent.

The league will culminate in a grand final on Sept. 15, 2024 at 4 p.m., followed by a presentation ceremony where the winning team will be awarded the Super League Barrie Trophy.

Nithin Liviero, president of Barrie Arts and Sports Academy, shared his excitement about the league: “The Super League Barrie is more than just a cricket competition. It’s a celebration of our community’s diversity, talent, and love for the game. And we are very thankful to our sponsors, Paul Sadlon Motors and Craighurst Crossing (Georgian International), for believing and helping us in our vision for the sport of cricket in Barrie. Also, a huge thanks to the support from Nawabs Indian restaurant and Gold Spa Unisex Salon for their support.”

Denny Jose, secretary of Barrie Arts and Sports Academy, said, “We are proud to provide a platform where people can come together, enjoy cricket, and build lasting connections and this is just a beginning.”
