The Rovers are preparing to celebrate Canada Day with an exciting doubleheader scheduled on July 6 at J.C. Massie Field.

The men play Hamilton United at 2 p.m. and the women play the Oakville Blue Devils at 6 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on Rogers TV. Foodiez Barrie will be serving up an assortment of classic poutine dishes, wings and delicious funnel cakes while Bean Around the Block will have caffeine lovers’ needs met with coffee and espresso available.

Both the men’s and women’s squads lost this past week in gut-wrenching fashion. The men lost 3-2 away to Oakville and the women lost 1-0 away to Woodbridge.

The men went into halftime with the game at 0-0. Oakville opened the second half by scoring in the 49th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Rovers countered with a goal in the 68th minute by winger CJ Smith to tie it up. The remainder of the half was a physical affair.

Drama ensued in the 90 + 3 minute when Oakville scored to take the lead and then added some insurance in the 90 + 5 minute to take a 3-1 lead. To their credit the Rovers continued to fight to the end with striker Jevontae Layne scoring a late goal in the 90 + 6 minute to make things interesting.

The women played well and had their chances in an evenly played game. A Woodbridge goal early in the second half was enough to seal the win for the home side.

The men currently sit in 10th place with a 2-5-4 record after 11 games. The women sit in seventh place after 12 games played with a 3-6-3 record.

The month of July will see some great theme nights take place at J.C. Massie Field. In addition to the Canada Day celebration scheduled for July 6 the team will host Military Appreciation Night on Friday, July 12 and Girls and Women in Sports Night on July 13. Family Fun Day will be celebrated on July 27. All are welcome to watch the Simcoe County Rovers play.

In what promises to be the biggest match in Rovers women’s history the team gets set to host a League1 Cup semifinal match Wednesday, July 17 at J.C. Massie Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. against London FC. The winner earns their way to the final and a chance to lift the League1 Cup trophy.
