An Angus man faces several charges in connection to a fatal crash last month that killed Barrie resident and former Olympic figure skater Alexandra Paul.
Dufferin OPP announced Wednesday afternoon that Sukhwinder Sidhu, 28, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and four counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. None of the allegations have been tested in court.
Shortly after 3 p.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 22, provincial police responded to a multi-vehicle crash on County Road 124, south of the 20th Sideroad, in Melancthon Township, about one hour southwest of Barrie.
The collision involved seven vehicles, including a transport truck.
Paul, a 31-year-old mother, was killed in the crash. Her 10-month-old son, Charlie, was also in the vehicle. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, and later transported by ambulance to a children's hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
"The initial investigation revealed that multiple passenger vehicles were stopped northbound County Road 124 in a construction zone," OPP stated in a news release Sept. 27. "A tractor-trailer entered the construction zone and collided into the rear of the lineup of vehicles."
The investigation is ongoing.
Paul worked as a lawyer at Barriston Law in Barrie since being called to the bar in 2021 and was a well-known figure skater, having competed at the Sochi Olympics with her husband and ice-dance partner, Mitch Islam, in 2014.
