ORILLIA - On Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2017, children will be returning back to school. The Orillia detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to send out a few reminders for parents and motorists.

The Community Safety Officers (CSO) will be starting the safety village for Grades 1-8. In the safety village children are taught ways to get to school safely such as: When riding a bike wear a helmet, when walking to school talk with your parents about their rules and follow them, be good when riding the bus so the driver can concentrate on the road and when getting a ride, buckle-up.

Parents please talk to your children about safety related topics when it comes to going to and from school and give those reminders every so often as kids tend to be forgetful.

Some important reminders for motorists regarding rules of the road. Remember that in school zones the speed limit is 40 kilometers per hour and speed fines are increased.

Please remember that when it comes to school busses, you must stop whenever approaching a stopped school bus with its alternating red lights flashing and stop arm extended weather you approach from the front or back.

Also when a crossing guard is guiding children across the road you are required to stop once the crossing guard steps onto the road with the sign extended.

These rules of the road are there to ensure the safety of our children. Safety is the responsibility of everyone including; parents and guardians, teachers, motorists, crossing guards and even the children themselves. Please dedicate a little more time to safety and have a safe, fun and educational school year.

Members of the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are committed to public safety, delivering proactive and innovative policing in partnership with our communities.
