Barrie senior charged with impaired after vehicle lands in ditch

PERRY TWP. — A Barrie senior faces multiple charges, including impaired driving, after their vehicle ending up in a ditch north of Huntsville on Tuesday night.  

Around 10 p.m. on Dec. 10, Almaguin Highlands OPP says responded to a traffic complaint on Deer Lake Road about a suspected impaired driver.

Police say they located the vehicle off the roadway in a ditch. 

Through the investigation, the driver was arrested for impaired driving and transported to a nearby detachment for further testing.

Maurice Kmyta, 75, of Barrie, has been charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired (blood-alcohol concentration 80 plus), operation while impaired (alcohol), failure to comply with a probation order (two counts), driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor, and disobeying a stop sign.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on Jan. 9, 2025, in Sundridge.

None of the allegations have been tested in court. 

The accused was also issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
