Barrie police have confirmed one man has been killed following an altercation downtown on Monday morning.
The Barrie Police Service Major Crime/Homicide Unit is investigating the death of 47-year-old man after an early morning confrontation between a group of people.
Police believe the incident took place just prior to 8:20 a.m., near 24 Collier St., which is Trinity Anglican Church.
"After the incident, an involved male, who sustained a life-threatening injury, made his way to a Dunlop Street East business where he collapsed and initially received medical attention from the County of Simcoe Paramedic Services. He was later transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased," police said in a news release Monday afternoon.
No arrests have been made.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and detectives do not believe there is a threat to public safety.
Both crime scenes have been released.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed "the violent but isolated interaction," or may have been driving in the area and has dash-cam video, to contact the Barrie Police Service at 705-725-7025.
The victim has since been transported to the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service for a post-mortem examination, which is scheduled to take place a date and time which is yet to be determined.
Police say further details will only be provided as the ongoing investigation permits.
