Barrie police have charged two drivers with careless driving after responding to a pair of rollovers in less than 12 hours.

On Thursday (Oct. 17), officers responded to two separate crashes where police say the vehicles “came to rest on its roof."

The first collision took place at the intersection of Bayfield Street and Grove Street West just before 11 a.m. and involved three vehicles.

“An eastbound sport-utility vehicle (SUV), being driven by a 23-year-old male from Barrie, entered the intersection against a red light, and rolled after being struck by a motor vehicle travelling northbound on Bayfield Street,” said Peter Leon, the department’s communications co-ordinator.

The crash caused the SUV to rollover onto its roof where it came into contact with another vehicle that was westbound from Grove Street.

The driver of the SUV was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was later charged with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act.

Later the same night, another crash, this one at the intersection of Anne Street and Dunlop Street West, sent a driver to local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

“From the investigation that followed, police have been able to determine that a sport-utility vehicle was travelling eastbound on Dunlop Street and entered the intersection against a red light. A southbound car was travelling through the intersection when it struck the SUV causing it to roll," police say.

The driver of the SUV, a 34-year-old Barrie resident, has been charged with careless driving.

“The Barrie Police Service is reminding motorists to always drive with due care and attention, be cautious when approaching intersections with stale green lights, always keep your eyes on the road and be aware of other motor vehicles, cyclists, e-bike operators and pedestrians who we share our roadways with," notes the release.
