An early morning patrol that started with a wellness check on a person in the back seat of a car ended in multiple firearm and drug charges for a 37-year-old Brampton man.
At around 2:40 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, Barrie police officers were on patrol on Rose Street, near St. Vincent Street, when they noticed a car being parked and two men walking away.
After officers spoke to the men, they took a peek at the parked vehicle and noticed a man in the backseat, police say.
“Officers tried to speak with this male and believed that he may be in medical distress as he did not respond to them,” states a news release from Barrie police.
Officers obtained access to the car, at which point they realized the man was not in need of medical attention, but was attempting to hide from authorities. He was found to be in possession of a large quantity of drugs, as well as a fully loaded semi-automatic pistol.
The passenger was arrested and taken to Barrie police headquarters on Fairview Drive where the investigation continued by detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division.
The man now faces firearm-related charges, as well as drug possession and trafficking charges in relation to the cocaine, ecstasy, percocet and fentanyl that he was found to be possessing.
The accused was held in custody and was scheduled to appear today by video for a bail hearing at the Barrie courthouse.
The vehicle that was initially observed by the patrol officers was also seized as part of the ongoing investigation, police noted. Arrest warrants have been issued for the two males whom police initially investigated after the car had been parked.
