NEWS RELEASE

The Barrie Police are seeking the public’s assistance to identify a male following a quick change scam that took place on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at the Georgian Mall, located at 509 Bayfield Street, in the City of Barrie.

While inside a retail store a suspect targeted an employee by paying for a small priced item with a large bill ($100). Prior to the employee giving back the change, the suspect engaged the employee in a series of quick money exchanges which left the employee confused. As a result of the transaction the suspect left the store with a profit and a pair of socks he never paid for.

The investigation is ongoing.

The suspect is described as;

  • Male, black (45 to 50 yrs.)
  • Medium build
  • Wearing a white t-shirt under a jean shirt, blue jeans and running shoes.

The quick change scam targets inexperienced employees/cashiers by paying for small priced items with large bills. In some instances suspect(s) work in teams of two where one suspects handles the money exchange while the second suspect acts as the distraction. To avoid being a victim to the scam, only complete the transaction for the purchase then close the cash register. If the customer is asking to exchange bills be weary of the scam and contact a manager before engaging in further interactions.

Anyone with information is asked to Constable Trollope of the Barrie Police Service at 705-725-7025, ext.2694, [email protected]  or to remain anonymous call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or leave an anonymous tip online at www.tipsubmit.com
