A 29-year-old Barrie man was charged with impaired driving after striking a tree in a single-vehicle collision on Cundles Road West overnight. There were no injuries reported.

A local man was arrested and charged with impaired driving after striking a tree in Barrie's north end overnight.

Just after 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 8, officers responded to a single-vehicle collision on Cundles Road West, between Burns Circle and Leacock Drive.

Upon arrival at the scene, police say it was apparent to the officers that the vehicle had left the roadway and struck a tree on the boulevard.

The car sustained "significant" damage to the left front wheel well and tire area, but there were no injuries reported by the driver, according to police.

Police say the driver, a 29-year-old Barrie man, showed signs of impairment and was arrested for impaired driving.

Officers transported the man to police headquarters on Fairview Road where a drug recognition evaluator (DRE) conducted an interview and, after a series of tests were conducted, was able to confirm the driver was impaired by drug.

The accused has been formally charged with operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drug, and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on Aug. 26.
