Jeep becomes disabled on ice surface in front of Caswell's Beach

MIDLAND, ON) -Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched at 9:30 a.m. March 22, 2018 to the Caswells Beach area in Tay Township in regards to a vehicle being driven erratically on the ice of Sturgeon Bay.

Attending officers were also assisted by members of the OPP Emergency Response Unit (ERT), Simcoe County Paramedic Services, Tay Township Fire Service, and a Canadian Forces Search and Rescue Helicopter who set up and observed the grey Jeep Liberty travel at high speed from the Hog Bay area over to Caswells Beach and onward and back to Waubaushene.

At 10:55 a.m. the Jeep became disabled on the ice surface in front of Caswells Beach and officers were able to arrest the lone male driver and take him into police custody without incident.

A 39-year-old male from Tay Township has been charged with the following offences contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, contrary to Section 249(1)(a)
  • Uttering Threats to Cause Death, contrary to Section 264.1(1)(a
  • Fail to Comply with Recognizance, contrary to Section 145
  • Mischief to Property, contrary to section 430(4)

He was held in custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie for a bail hearing on March 23, 2018.

Emergency services personnel which to thank the members of the public who called the OPP Communications Centre with updated information and also a big thank you to the flight crew of the Canadian Forces Helicopter who was nearby on an training exercise when the incident occurred and responded.
