Man with child in vehicle charged with impaired in south Barrie

Caller provided city police with detailed description; vehicle stopped Saturday evening on County Road 27, near Ardagh Road

A 30-year-old Barrie man, who had a young child in the vehicle, was busted for impaired driving in Barrie’s south end on the weekend.

On Saturday, July 13 at 5:34 p.m., Barrie police officers responded to a report of a suspected impaired driver who had just left a plaza parking lot at Essa Road and Mapleton Avenue, according to police.

Police said a caller provided detailed information about the vehicle, which included the make, model, colour and licence plate. They also noted there was a young child was in a backseat.

A short time later, police say officers located the vehicle as it travelled on Ardagh Road. The driver was stopped after turning northbound onto County Road 27.

The driver “exhibited signs of impairment and later failed an approved screening device test after a demand was made,” police say.

The man was arrested and transported to police headquarters on Fairview Road where a breathalyzer technician determined that his ability to “operate a conveyance was impaired by alcohol.”

The driver has been charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired and operation while impaired – over 0.80 milligrams.

He was released a short time later and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on July 24.

The man's vehicle was seized and impounded for seven days, and his driver’s licence was also suspended for 90 days, in accordance with the Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) program.

The child was unharmed, according to police.
