A North York man has been charged with impaired driving after Barrie police stopped his vehicle in the city's south end Monday evening.

Around 7 p.m. on June 17, city police responded to a call about a person sitting in a parked car in a parking located at Big Bay Point Road, west of Yonge Street.

"A person who works in a nearby store noted that the male driver appeared intoxicated and provided a description of the person, the vehicle they were operating, and the licence plate," police stated in a release. "The citizen also reported to police that the driver just left the parking lot."

At 7:08 p.m., a responding officer spotted the suspect vehicle, which was travelling northbound on Yonge Street as it approached Big Bay Point Road. A traffic stop was conducted.

While in conversation with the driver, police say the officer observed "signs of impairment" and an roadside screening device was administered. Police say the driver registered a fail.

The man was arrested and transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where a breathalyzer technician confirmed he was almost two and a half times over the legal limit.

A 38-year-old North York man has been charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired – blood-alcohol concentration (80 plus) as well as failure to surrender and insurance card.

He was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Barrie court on July 3.

The man's vehicle was impounded for seven days and his driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days under the administrative driver’s licence suspension program.
