The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has determined an OPP officer did not commit a crime by shooting a man in Orillia earlier this year with an anti-riot weapon.

On March 29, officers responded to a report of a 33-year-old man in crisis at The Lighthouse shelter on Queen Street. The man had a knife and was threatening to harm himself, according to the SIU.

After a two-and-a-half-hour standoff, the SIU says the man jumped off the roof and tried to run away. An officer fired one shot at the man, who was then arrested. He did not suffer serious injuries.

On Friday, the SIU said its director, Joseph Martino, “found no reasonable grounds” to believe the officer committed a crime.

The full director’s report can be found here.
