NEWS RELEASE

SOUTH SIMCOE POLICE

************************
On Tuesday, Sept. 5, children return to school after the summer break.

The South Simcoe Police Service urges drivers, students, parents, educators and everyone in the community to focus on safety.

Operation Back To School will run from Sept. 5 to 19.

Officers will be out in numbers for the first two weeks of the school year, monitoring school zones and making sure that everyone gets where they're going in a safe and timely manner.

The safety of our children is of the upmost importance. Police will have zero tolerance for moving violations within school zones.

We'll also be reminding students and parents of the rules for the safe transportation and drop off of children to school. Please obey the rules and guidance of school staff when dropping children at school. We urge parents and students to walk to school whenever possible.

Speeding, distracted driving, disobeying traffic signals, unsafe turns and seat belt and car seat use are just a few of the things officers will be watching.

This is the week for parents to talk to their children about road safety. Take a test run. Walk with your child to school or their bus stop. Review safety rules and point out problem areas and safe havens along the route. Remind them to cross roads safely by using signalized intersections or crosswalks. Set a good example by never jaywalking!

Drivers are also reminded to stop in both directions when a school bus has its signal lights flashing and stop arm extended.

Let's make sure all our children go back to school safely!
