Bracebridge OPP have arrested two people following a brazen mid-afternoon theft from the Royal Canadian Legion branch in Gravenhurst.

Police say at about 3:20 p.m. on Nov. 20, two people entered the legion on Veterans Way and stole a quantity of items — including irreplaceable First World War and Second World War memorabilia in addition to a wheelchair and clothing.

"Bracebridge OPP officers conducted an investigation into the theft and with the assistance of community members and the availability of surveillance footage nearby, the suspects were identified," police stated in a news release.

As a result, Ashley Schell, 32, and Jesse Dawson, 34, both of Gravenhurst, were each charged with theft over $5,000. They will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on Dec. 17, 2024 and Jan. 14, 2025, respectively, to answer to the charge.

Many of the stolen items have not yet been recovered and anyone with information on the whereabouts of these irreplaceable items is asked to call Bracebridge OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
