Police from Barrie and Peel Region worked together to end a standoff involving a “person in crisis” after almost 24 hours on Tuesday afternoon.
"Peel Regional Police provided resources today in the form of their tactical team as well as crisis negotiators, and provided valuable assistance to our investigation given the fact our officers had been at it for over 12 hours,” Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday shortly after the man surrendered.
“They provided the relief we needed, to give our officers a rest, should the situation have continued into the evening hours,” Leon added.
The standoff came to a peaceful end through negotiations between the man and police on the scene at Mapleview Drive East and Yonge Street.
“The individual surrendered without incident to the officers and was apprehended and taken to local hospital,” Leon said.
Police have not said whether any charges have been laid and the man's name has not been released.
Around 3:45 p.m., Tuesday, police say the man was taken into custody at the scene in the city's St. Paul's area in the south end.
No injuries have been reported in connection to the situation.
Police say the investigation continues.
“We don’t know if there will be any further information released given the complexities of the underlying situation they were dealing with," Leon said.
Details of weapons involved, if any, also remains unclear.
“We have an idea,” Leon said about what led to the incident. “But right now, first and foremost, the health and well-being of the individual involved is what’s paramount and we are seeing to that as we speak.”
A police presence was expected to continue around St. Paul's Anglican Church this evening as police wrap up their on-scene work.
