INNISFIL - On Wednesday, June 28, 2017, just before 9 p.m., officers from the South Simcoe Police Service Marine Unit were returning from assisting with security control at the Canada 150 airshow over Kempenfelt Bay when they were contacted by Coast Guard. A vessel with mechanical failure on Lake Simcoe near Fox Island had called in a mayday over VHF radio.

The vessel, a 24 ft FourWinds with five people on board, had encountered engine failure while enroute to watch the airshow. The operator had tried to make repairs but was unsuccessful, so called in the mayday for assistance.

Officers aboard the John Wardrop II located the boat about 4 km north of Fox Island and took it under tow, returning it to Innisfil Beach Park where it was tied off for repairs.

A VHF radio is an important safety feature which assisted the boaters in this case. A fully charged cell phone is also recommended for use in emergencies.
