Police called to investigate suspicious fire in Innisfil

INNISFIL - On Saturday, Sept. 23 at approximately 1 a.m., South Simcoe Police received a 9-1-1 call regarding suspicious persons who had lit a shed on fire outside a home on Merrett Street in the Town of Innisfil.

Innisfil Fire and Rescue Services were called and extinguished the fire. During the subsequent police investigation, officers checked the inside of the shed and discovered a quantity of marijuana, ammunition and what appeared to be an improvised explosive device (IED) inside the building. Officers secured the residence and prepared a search warrant.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., South Simcoe Police with the assistance of York Regional Police - Emergency Response Unit, Innisfil Fire and Rescue Services, Simcoe County Paramedics Services and York Regional Paramedic Services executed a search warrant on the shed.

A quantity of marijuana, ammunition and a explosive device were seized by police. A 23-year-old Innisfil man living at the home was arrested, and is currently in custody at the South Division. He will be facing several charges.

At this time, the person(s) responsible for starting the early morning fire are still outstanding. Police are asking anyone with information on this case to contact the investigating officer, Detective Constable Holly Murray at (705) 436-2141 ext. 1009 or Crime Stoppers.
