A Kitchener man faces multiple charges after provincial police say a tracking device on a vehicle that had been stolen in Port Severn eventually led them to Wasaga Beach on Monday.

Shortly after 7 a.m. on July 15, Huronia West OPP officers responded to a complaint of a stolen vehicle from Honey Harbour Road in Port Severn.

Police say the vehicle was equipped with a built-in GPS and was being tracked by its owner, who reported that the driver was heading into the Huronia West OPP area.

The vehicle was located near Highway 26 and County Road 10 in Clearview Township where a traffic stop was attempted.

However, police say the vehicle failed to stop. Instead, it struck a fence and jumped a ditch before proceeding toward Wasaga Beach.

"A short time later, the vehicle was located on Shore Lane in Wasaga Beach and the lone driver fled by foot. After a brief foot pursuit, the individual was arrested without incident," OPP stated in a news release.

During a search, police say 56.4 grams of fentanyl was located and seized.

James Harder, 36, of Kitchener, has been charged with:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Flight from a peace officer
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Failure to comply with a probation order (two counts)
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking (opioid)

The accused is scheduled to appear in Collingwood court on Aug. 13.

None of the allegations have been tested in court.
