A Ramara Township man has been charged for allegedly fabricating a story about his vehicle being stolen.

On Friday at about 7:30 a.m., police responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle in a field off of Concession Road 1 in Ramara. When they arrived, no one was there, but they found a vehicle with significant damage. The airbags had been deployed and there were several alcohol cans in the vehicle, Orillia OPP said in a news release.

The registered owner of the vehicle had two outstanding warrants and a suspended licence for impaired charges.

At about 3:45 p.m. the same day, the owner of the vehicle reported it stolen. At 4 p.m., officers met with the man and arrested him for outstanding warrants. He had “noticeable injuries likely caused by an accident,” police said.

Dean Howden, 40, has been charged with public mischief. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
