Shots fired, numerous charges follow

SEVERN TOWNSHIP - On Wednesday, June 21, 2017 the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to reports of shots being fired on Burnside Line in Severn Township.

At approximately 2:20 p.m., police were dispatched to Burnside Line in Severn Township with reports of shots being fired at another person. Police arrived at the location and were told by witnesses that a male had fired a gun at another male.

The suspect was identified as the resident of the house police attended and a description was given to police. Responding officers quickly arrested the suspect without further incident. 

As a result of the investigation, police have charged Severn Township resident, Richard Jarvis, age 56, with the following offences:

  • Careless use of a firearm, section 86(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Assault with a weapon, section 267(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Possess weapon for dangerous purpose, section 88(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Utter threats to cause death, section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Discharge firearm - Recklessness, section 244.2(1)(b) of the Criminal Code

The accused has been held in custody pending a court appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on June 22, 2017.
