The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the circumstances of a 17-year-old male shot by York Regional Police in Aurora during an attempted break-and-enter.
The organization said police responded to the scene at Downey Circle in Aurora at approximately 7:45 p.m. Oct. 30. Soon after officers arrived, there was an exchange of gunfire between the 17-year-old and police officers.
“The (male) was struck multiple times. He was pronounced deceased at the scene,” SIU said in a news release.
Multiple residents in the area reported hearing the gunshots throughout the neighbourhood. Police blocked off several homes in the area for the investigation last night.
One officer suffered minor injuries, according to the SIU, and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The agency has assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to the case. Four subject officials and five witness officials have been designated in the investigation.
A post-mortem was scheduled for this morning in Toronto.
The SIU handles cases where there is a serious injury, death, allegation of sexual assault or discharge of a firearm by an officer at a person. SIU investigations and their findings typically take several months.
The SIU is urging anyone with information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact 1-800-787-8529 or online.
